Luz Olivares Capelle was born and raised in Argentina. She studied fine arts at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and directing at the E.N.E.R.C. (National Institute for Film Experimentation and Production) Buenos Aires and at the Film Academy Vienna, with Prof. Michael Haneke. She also did a directing residency with Andreas Kriegenburg at the Burgtheater (2016, AUT) and attended different seminars on working with actors* such as with Susan Batson, Tizza Covi, and many more.

Her short films have been screened at numerous film festivals such as the International Film Festival Rotterdam (NLD), the Future Frames Program of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, (CZE), the Viennale (AUT) and others and have won several awards. Among others, she was awarded the Max Ophüls Prize 2017 (DE); the Grand Prix International Short Award 2017 (Cork Film Festival, IR) and the Austrian Film Award for Short Film by both the Academy of Austrian Film (2017), and the V.I.S. Vienna Independent Shorts and Diagonale, 2016 (AUT).

Among others, she was awarded the Max Ophüls Prize 2017 (DE); the Grand Prix International Short Award 2017 (Cork Film Festival, IR) and the Austrian Film Award for Short Film by both the Academy of Austrian Film (2017), and the V.I.S. Vienna Independent Shorts and Diagonale, 2016 (AUT).

Her screenplay work has been supported by the Hubert Bals Fund 2017 (NLD), the Berlinale Short Form Station 2020 (DE) and fellowships such as the START Fellowship of the Federal Chancellery 2016 (AUT) and the Literar Mechana Fellowship 2020 (AUT), as well as receiving an honorable mention at the “If she can see it she can at it” Screenplay Competition 2020 (AUT) and the Thomas Pluch Award for Best Short Film Screenplay 2016 (AUT).
